During the darker days of winter, it’s nice to take some time to create some warmth in your own home! These homemade candles will do just that! Best of all, they can be topped with your homegrown dried herbs!
These candles take only about 20 minutes to make! They are the perfect way to decorate your hearth and home for winter. Or, give them as gifts to your loved ones!
You can top your candles with any herbs. I particularly like dried lavender blossoms because of their lovely scent when the wax is warmed. I also really love using pine needles for a winter scent! You can even add essential oils for more scents!
Here’s How To Make Your Own Candles!
Materials:
Wick
Scissors
Spatula
Dried herbs
Natural beeswax pastilles or soy wax
A small jar or other heat-safe containers for your candle
A double boiler (or you can use a regular pot and place a heat-safe bowl over the top)
Clothespins or a pencil to secure the wick
Essential oils for scent (optional)
Instructions:
- Fill your pot with 2-4 cups of water (about half full). Bring to a boil.
- Once the water is boiling, place a double boiler or a heat safe bowl over the boiling water.
- Measure out enough beeswax or soy to fill your container. I used a small mason jar and filled it to the top with the beeswax pastilles.
- Pour the wax into the bowl or double boiler. Stir with a spatula until completely melted.
- While the wax is melting, prepare your wick. Place the wick upright in the center or the candle container. Secure it with clothespins to a pencil to keep it centered.
- Once the wax is completely melted, pour it into your candle container.
- Top with your dried herbs.
Note:
Use a double boiler or heat-safe bowl: When melting the wax, it's important to use a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl placed over boiling water. This indirect heat method ensures that the wax melts gently and evenly without the risk of burning.
Measure the wax properly: Measure out enough beeswax or soy wax to fill your candle container. It's recommended to use about the same volume as your container to achieve a nicely proportioned candle.
Stir until completely melted: Continuously stir the wax with a spatula until it is completely melted and smooth. This ensures that all the wax is evenly heated and properly mixed.
Secure the wick in the center: Prior to pouring the melted wax, place the wick upright in the center of the candle container. Secure it with clothespins attached to a pencil to keep it centered. This ensures that the wick remains in the middle as the wax solidifies.
Add dried herbs as a finishing touch: Once the wax is poured into the candle container, immediately sprinkle or arrange your dried herbs on top. Press them gently into the wax to help them adhere. The herbs will infuse the melted wax with their delightful scents as the candle burns.
